Navigation within BCA Apps

Big City Animals™ all function in the same navigational fashion:

Turning Pages:
Swipe Right to Left
Replaying Pages:
Hit the sound icon that will appear next to the page’s text on upper left of the paragraph when first narration is complete
Read to Me:
Hit the Pink Button-Icon with the headphones on the apps’ Home Page
Read to Myself (no narration):
Hit the Blue Button-Icon with the book on the app’s Home Page
Seeing Index of All Pages:
Green House Button-Icon on Home Page –  and at top right of every page will display all story pages in a running filmstrip at the bottom of the screen; you may then choose a specific page
Informational Pop-Outs:
Any items within the story’s pages that contain additional information will be highlighted with a yellow outline to indicate that there is more information; sometimes this outline will appear after the narration is complete.
Accessing Sound Effects on Story Pages:
Pressing certain items within a page will play a specific sound effect (e.g. clock or bird); tap around the page to find hidden sounds
Accessing Animation on Story Pages:
If additional animation or interactivity is available with a page, you will either see:

  • A character or object moving (you may be able to touch and move – e.g. such as the Baseball in Boston Bernie Snaps the City)
  • Character will appear “pulsing” and if touched, will perform an action of some sort (e.g. Bernie snapping photos in Boston Bernie Snaps the City)

General Troubleshooting

The Information-Popups are not highlighting.
Causes:
If the pages are swiped or turned too quickly, the device may not be given enough allowed to load the highlighting functionality correctly.  

Potential Solutions:

  • Swipe Left to Right and Go back and play previous page from beginning to end, then move forward to page with Informational pop-outs
  • Hit the green index button and reselect page for play
  • Hit the green index button, hit the home page and continue turning the pages (swiping Right to Left) in a slower fashion

Apple iPhone & iPads 

Apps not updating/stuck downloading
Symptoms: Updates pending in the App Store are not downloading or begin to download and then get stuck and do not complete.

Causes:
Data connections play a big role in downloading/updating apps. However, when data connections are stable, resource issues within iOS can attribute to apps installing correctly or getting stuck mid-way. Also, storage space availability may prevent certain apps from installing.
Potential solutions: Check data connections to ensure they’re working correctly.

Also, check available storage space in Settings | General | About to see how much space is available to download/update apps. If space is low, try checking Settings | General | Usage | Manage Storage for an itemized list of all the apps installed on your iPhone and their current storage usage in MB/GB to identify any outstanding offenders — and delete them to shore up space.
If neither of the above solutions work to resolve the problem, try to delete the app from the home screen first, then try downloading a clean copy from the App Store. Sometimes, rebooting the iOS device may help to kill any active processes associated with a particular app, and it allows for error-free updating/installing .

How do I delete an app and re-download?

  • Delete the application from your device. Press down on the icon until all your icons start shaking. An X should appear on the top corner of the icon. Press the X, and you will be prompted to delete.
  • Re-download the application with the same iTunes login, and you will not have to purchase it again.
  • Please restart your device after re-downloading. See “restart” here:

Music / Sound

Why can’t I hear the sound? (iPhone / iPod touch)

  • Check the Ring/Silent switch on the upper left corner of your iPhone and make sure that the orange dot is not showing. See P. 13 of the iPhone User Guide
  • Turn up the volume using the buttons on the left side of your iPhone.
  • Go to the purple music selection button and make sure that the Music is “ON” in the upper right corner.
  • Please restart your device. See “restart”

Why can’t I hear the sound? (iPad)

  • Check the Side Switch on the upper right corner of your iPad and make sure that the orange dot is not showing.
  • Turn up the volume using the buttons on the right side of your iPad.
  • Go to the purple music selection button and make sure that the Music is “ON” in the upper right corner.
  • Please restart your device. See “Restart iPad” Go to Settings > General > Use Side Switch to: > Check Mute
  • Open the app, and the sound should now be working.
  • (Optional) Now if you want to change the Settings to “Use Side Switch to: Lock Rotation,” you can. With the Lock Rotation setting selected, you can change the Side Switch to show the orange dot, and the app will now still have sound.
